Corcovado


 

 

There is no doubt that the Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer), splendid at the top of the Corcovado Hill, meters high and giving a sweeping panorama of sea and mountain, is one of the images that represents Brazil the most abroad. The place is visited by almost a million tourists per year, that go up by train to the feet of the statue.

More than just observing the beautiful landscapes from the windons of the train, the passengers get to know some of the history when they ride along the centennial railway of Corcovado, inaugurated in 1884 and responsible for taking countless personalities, from artists to kings, for a picturesque ride.

On the way up to the top of the Corcovado, the train goes through the Tijuca Forest, the largest urban forest in the world and separates the Northern and Southern parts of Rio de Janeiro. The National Park of Tijuca is very popular with the cariocas that elected the place for the practice of sports on weekends.

The railway was inaugurated by Emperor Dom Pedro II, in 1884, with steam engines. In the beginning of th 20th century, the old trains were substituted by eletric machines. Today, the trains that do this route were brought from Switzerland and are absoluty moderm and safe models.

The train that goes to the top of the Corcovado is open from 8:30 am to 6:30 pm with trains that leave every 30 minutes and carries up to 360 passengers.

The trip takes only 20 minutes.

After the visit to the Christ we head to São Conrado beach, where we can see hang gliders flying and landing. From there we follow trough Niemeyer Avenue, passing by Leblon, Ipanema e Copacabana beaches on our way to your hotel
